Machame Route Day by Day

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m
Distance: 11km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Your adventure begins with a drive to Machame Gate, where you’ll start the trek. Hike through lush rainforest, with the sounds of tropical birds and the vibrant greenery surrounding you. The route gradually ascends, and you'll reach Machame Camp, a peaceful spot to rest for the night.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Elevation: 3,000m to 3,850m
Distance: 5km
Hiking Time: 4 - 6 hours
The trek continues with a steady climb through the moorland zone. As you ascend, the landscape opens up, offering stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s summit. Arrive at Shira Camp, perched on the Shira Plateau, where you can relax and enjoy the expansive views of the mountain and the surrounding valleys.

The day’s trek will be challenging, but you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the landscape. Barranco Camp offers a tranquil atmosphere for an overnight rest.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3,950m to 4,640m
Distance: 8km
Hiking Time: 7 - 8 hours
Today’s trek will take you through rocky terrain as you climb toward Barafu Camp, the base for your summit attempt. The hike is demanding, but the reward is the incredible view of the summit in the distance. Barafu Camp sits on a ridge, providing a perfect view of the surrounding landscape. Rest here, and prepare for the summit ascent later that night.
